1970년대 후반부터 중국 정부는 수천 명의 관료를 싱가포르에 파견하여 싱가포르의 경제 및 사회 정책을 배우도록 했다. 이 정당 국가의 핵심 기획이 계급 투쟁에서 ‘경제’로 대체되었던 당시, 덩샤오핑이 중국의 개혁 의제와 관련하여 유일하게 모델로 명명했던 싱가포르라는 도시 국가는 그 세대 중국 지도부의 정치적 상상력을 재편하는 데 대단히 중요한 역할을 했다.

영상 시리즈 “민중 vs. 실제 경제, 세 개의 에피소드”에서는 당시 ‘역사의 종말’이라는 자유주의의 의기양양한 선언 하에 촉발된 것처럼 보였던 두 국가의 만남을 오늘날 위기에 처한 자유주의 기획의 관점에서 재검토한다. 전 세계에서 경제적 박탈이 벌어지고 있는 오늘날, 중국의 현대 정치 경제 체제를 탐구하는 장기 리서치 프로젝트의 일환인 이 작품은 벌써 40년째 진행되고 있는 중국의 시장 경제 ‘실험’을 살핀다. 이는 우리가 ‘경제’에 관해 이야기할 때 정확히 무엇을 말하는 것인지 사유하기 위한 실마리가 된다.

이 시리즈는 1970년대 후반 중국에서 나타난 탈사회주의 전환에서 시작하여 중국의 경제 개혁이 한계에 이른 것처럼 보이는 현재 시점에서 끝난다. 세 편의 에피소드로 펼쳐지는 이 서사는 중국이 아무리 서구의 과잉 금융화된 경제에 비해 자신의 ‘실물 경제’가 가진 힘을 자랑해도, 바로 그 실물, 자본주의 경제의 ‘실제’야말로 역사적 주체로서의 ‘민중’을 박탈하고, 사라지게 하고, 재부상하게 한 핵심임을 시사한다. – 호 루이 안

“The People vs. the Real Economy in Three Episodes”

Since the late seventies, the Chinese government has dispatched thousands of officials to Singapore to study its economic and social policies. As the only country explicitly named by Deng Xiaoping as a model for China’s reform agenda, the city-state has been crucial in reshaping the political imagination of a generation of Chinese leadership in a time when “the economy” had replaced class struggle as the key project of the party-state.

In the video series “The People vs. the Real Economy in Three Episodes”, this history of encounters between the two countries—one that was set into motion by what then appeared to be the triumphant “end of history” proclamation of liberalism—is re-examined against the ongoing cri-sis of the liberal project. Amidst the widespread economic dispossession taking place across the world today, this work-in-progress manifestation of a long-term research project into China’s modern political economy takes the country’s over four-decade-long “experiment” with the market economy as a basis to think about what it is exactly we talk about when we talk about “the economy.”

The series begins with China’s post-socialist turn in the late seventies and ends in the present day where the country’s economic reforms appear to have reached their limit. Unfolding over three episodes, the narrative suggests that even as China continues to tout the strength of its “real economy” over the dissimulations of over-financialised economies in the West, it is the exactly the “real” of the capitalist economy that has led to the dispossession, disappearance and reemergence of “the people” as a historical subject. – Ho Rui An
