이 연구는 동남아시아의 주요 도시, 특히 마닐라와 싱가포르의 대중교통 운전사들를 대중 문화에서 어떻게 묘사했는가를 분석했다. 1장에서는 연구 주제와 주요 연구 자료인 대중문화, 논픽션, 개인적 이야기, 동남아시아 도시사를 다뤘다. 2장에서는 식민지 필리핀과 싱가포르에서 전통적인 마차나 인력거를 대체했던 교통수단의 동력화(motorization)가 어떻게 사회적 구조를 변화시켰고 근대 식민 담론을 형성했는지를 분석했다. 3장과 4장에서 탈식민지 시대에 택시, 버스, 지프니와 기타 유사한 운송 방식의 운전사들을 주요하게 다루었던 잡지, 회화, 라디오 프로그램, 영화, 소설 등을 주요 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 마지막 5장에서는 대중문화 속에 나타난 도시 대중교통 운전사에 관한 비유와 편견에 초점을 맞추었는데, 사회경제적 어려움, 근대성, 남성성, 친밀한 지식, 정치적 행동 등의 주제가 가장 두드러졌다.
